The Ilizarov Technique is a specialized orthopedic surgical method used primarily for bone lengthening, treating fractures, correcting deformities, and managing non-unions (when a broken bone fails to heal properly). Named after Soviet orthopedic surgeon Gavriil Ilizarov, this technique involves the use of an external fixator, known as the Ilizarov frame, which consists of rings connected by metal rods and wires placed around the bone.

Key Uses:

  • Bone Lengthening: It is used to lengthen bones, often in cases of limb-length discrepancies.
  • Fracture Treatment: The technique helps treat complex fractures that cannot be stabilized by conventional methods.
  • Bone Deformities: It corrects bone deformities, often congenital or due to trauma.
  • Non-unions: The method promotes healing in cases where bones have not properly united after a fracture.
  • Bone Transport: Used for reconstructing large bone defects.

Process:

  1. Surgical Insertion: Small wires are drilled through the bone and attached to the external frame.
  2. Gradual Adjustment: Over time, the frame is adjusted to slowly lengthen or reshape the bone.
  3. Bone Regeneration: This controlled mechanical distraction stimulates new bone growth in the gap created.

The Ilizarov Technique is known for its effectiveness in complex orthopedic cases, but the treatment process can be lengthy, requiring frequent adjustments and patient compliance.
